HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Curtiss Hawk 81-A2 was a robust and agile fighter aircraft that saw service with several Allied air forces during the early stages of World War II. Known for its sturdy construction, excellent low-altitude performance, and versatility in both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, the Hawk 81-A2 was the export variant of the P-36 Hawk, widely used by the American Volunteer Group (AVG) in China. Its armament typically included four .50 caliber machine guns, providing a balance of firepower and maneuverability ideal for confronting enemy aircraft over the Asia-Pacific theater.
Hawk 81-A2 No.77 was flown by Robert Smith of the 3rd Pursuit Squadron, part of the legendary AVG, also famously known as the “Flying Tigers.” Deployed in November 1941, Smith and his squadron were tasked with defending Chinese airspace against Japanese advances. Operating from forward airfields in China and Burma, the AVG conducted aggressive defensive and offensive missions, providing air cover for key infrastructure, supply routes, and ground troops, while engaging Japanese bombers and fighters in intense aerial combat.
During its service, Hawk 81-A2 No.77 saw action in the opening months of U.S. involvement in World War II, including missions coinciding with the attack on Pearl Harbor and the initial Japanese offensives in Southeast Asia. Pilots like Robert Smith leveraged the Hawk’s speed and agility to achieve notable aerial victories, disrupting enemy operations and earning a reputation for tactical daring and effectiveness. The AVG’s contribution, exemplified by aircraft such as No.77, played a crucial role in stabilizing the region during a period of intense aerial and ground conflict.
This 1:48 scale model faithfully reproduces the iconic Flying Tigers markings and dynamic profile of this early-war fighter, making it an exceptional collectible for enthusiasts of World War II aviation history.
