The Hawker Hurricane Mk.I was the backbone of RAF Fighter Command at the outbreak of the Second World War, and No. 601 Squadron—known as the “Millionaires’ Squadron”—was among the units that flew it into the most critical air battles over Britain. Powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine and armed with eight .303 Browning machine guns, the Hurricane combined rugged construction with stable gun platforms, making it exceptionally effective against enemy bombers. Pilot Officer William “Billy” Fiske, an American volunteer and Olympic gold medalist bobsledder, joined No. 601 Squadron as one of the first U.S. citizens to fly in defense of Britain. During the Battle of Britain, Fiske flew Hurricane Mk.I aircraft on intensive patrols and interception missions as the Luftwaffe launched sustained attacks on airfields, cities, and shipping. The Hurricanes of 601 Squadron frequently engaged German bomber formations escorted by fighters, breaking up raids before they could reach their targets.
