HISTORY ASPECTS:
The McDonnell Douglas AV-8B+ Harrier II BuNo 165001, marked as WE01 and operated by VMA-214 “Black Sheep,” represents one of the most capable variants of the Marine Corps’ famous vertical/short takeoff and landing attack aircraft. Developed from the original Harrier concept, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II provided the United States Marine Corps with a unique ability to operate from austere forward bases, short runways, and amphibious assault ships. The AV-8B+ variant introduced an advanced APG-65 radar, significantly enhancing the aircraft’s air-to-air and all-weather strike capabilities while maintaining the flexibility that made the Harrier legendary.
Assigned to the historic Marine Attack Squadron 214, BuNo 165001 carried the famous “Black Sheep” insignia originally made famous during World War II by Gregory Boyington and his renowned squadron. Based at Marine Corps Air Station Yuma, VMA-214 trained extensively in close air support, battlefield interdiction, and expeditionary operations. As the squadron’s WE01 aircraft, 165001 often served in leadership and demonstration roles while maintaining full operational readiness for deployment wherever Marine air power was needed.
The AV-8B Harrier II family saw extensive combat service in major conflicts including the Gulf War, the War in Afghanistan, and the Iraq War. Harriers provided close air support to coalition ground forces, conducted armed reconnaissance missions, and delivered precision strikes against enemy positions. Aircraft from VMA-214 participated in overseas deployments supporting Marine expeditionary operations, demonstrating the Harrier’s ability to bring combat power directly to the battlefield from locations inaccessible to conventional fighters. The AV-8B+ remained a vital Marine Corps asset until the gradual transition to the F-35B Lightning II.
This 1:48 scale model beautifully captures the distinctive appearance and combat legacy of one of the Marine Corps’ most iconic aircraft. Featuring authentic squadron markings, detailed ordnance, and the unmistakable profile of the Harrier, it is an outstanding addition for collectors of modern military aviation. Combining the heritage of the legendary Black Sheep squadron with the versatility of the Harrier II Plus, this replica makes an impressive centerpiece for any collection.
