HISTORY ASPECTS:
The F-4J Phantom II "Showtime 106," Bureau Number 155769, served with VF-96 "Fighting Falcons" aboard the USS Constellation during one of the most intense periods of aerial combat in the Vietnam War. On May 10, 1972, this particular aircraft gained fame when it was flown by Lt. Randy "Duke" Cunningham and Lt. (jg) Willie Driscoll during Operation Linebacker. That day, the duo achieved three aerial victories against North Vietnamese MiG-17s, bringing their total to five kills and earning them the distinction of becoming the U.S. Navy’s first aces of the Vietnam conflict.
"Showtime 106" was a McDonnell Douglas F-4J, an upgraded variant of the Phantom II that featured improved radar, avionics, and engines, making it a formidable multirole fighter. VF-96 operated from the deck of the Constellation, launching missions deep into North Vietnam to escort bombers, perform strike missions, and engage enemy fighters. The dogfight on May 10 culminated in a dramatic air-to-air encounter that ended with Cunningham and Driscoll downing a third MiG before their F-4 was hit by a surface-to-air missile. Despite severe damage and fire, they managed to nurse the stricken jet out over the Gulf of Tonkin and eject safely, where they were rescued by U.S. forces.
This engagement underscored the high-stakes nature of air combat over Vietnam and highlighted both the capabilities of the F-4J and the exceptional skill of its aircrews. Though the original "Showtime 106" was lost after the mission, it became an icon of U.S. naval aviation and a symbol of the Phantom II’s legacy in Southeast Asia. The aircraft and crew's achievements remain deeply woven into the fabric of naval fighter history, often cited in military aviation studies and commemorations of the Vietnam War.
This 1:72 scale model captures the bold presence and historic significance of one of naval aviation’s most celebrated aircraft. Featuring accurate squadron markings, detailed weaponry, and realistic panel lines, this collectible is a tribute to the bravery of VF-96 and a centerpiece for any Vietnam-era or jet aviation collection.
