HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Northrop YF-23 “Black Widow II” was one of two prototype aircraft developed for the United States Air Force’s Advanced Tactical Fighter competition, a program intended to produce a next-generation air superiority fighter to replace the F-15 Eagle. PAV-1, serial 87-0800, was the first YF-23 to fly and quickly distinguished itself with its sleek diamond-shaped wings, canted tail surfaces, and exceptional emphasis on stealth and high-speed performance. Its design prioritized low observability from all aspects, along with the ability to supercruise at sustained supersonic speeds without afterburner, showcasing a radically modern approach to fighter design.
First flown in 1990, PAV-1 demonstrated impressive performance during flight testing at Edwards Air Force Base. The aircraft achieved high speeds, excellent range, and extremely low radar signature, making it a strong contender in the competition against the Lockheed YF-22. The YF-23’s internal weapons bays, advanced aerodynamics, and smooth blended surfaces reflected Northrop’s extensive experience in stealth technology gained from the B-2 Spirit program. Test pilots praised the aircraft’s stability and efficiency, noting its potential as a long-range, survivable air dominance platform.
Although the YF-23 never entered production and therefore did not participate in any operational conflicts, its development occurred during a period of major geopolitical change at the end of the Cold War. The technologies proven by PAV-1 influenced later stealth aircraft design and contributed to the evolution of modern air combat concepts centered on low observability, sensor integration, and beyond-visual-range engagement. Today, 87-0800 stands as a reminder of an ambitious chapter in aviation history, representing a path not taken but one that left a lasting impact on aerospace engineering.
This 1:72 scale model captures the futuristic lines and historic significance of one of the most advanced prototype fighters ever built, offering collectors a striking representation of a legendary aircraft from the Advanced Tactical Fighter era.
