HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Northrop/McDonnell Douglas YF-23 was one of the most advanced fighter prototypes of its generation, developed for the U.S. Air Force’s Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition. PAV-2, serial number 87-0801, was the second prototype built and was nicknamed the “Gray Ghost” due to its overall light gray paint scheme. First flown in 1990, the aircraft was designed to push the boundaries of stealth technology, high-speed performance, and long-range air combat capabilities. Its sleek, diamond-shaped wings, V-tail configuration, and internal weapons bays made it one of the most futuristic aircraft of its time.
The YF-23 PAV-2 was equipped with three AIM-120 AMRAAMs and two AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles during weapons load demonstrations, showcasing its ability to carry a potent air-to-air arsenal entirely inside its fuselage to maintain stealth. Flight trials demonstrated that the Gray Ghost could achieve sustained supersonic speeds without afterburner (supercruise), a critical requirement for the ATF program. Its stealth characteristics were considered superior to its competitor, the Lockheed YF-22, and its aerodynamic design provided excellent high-altitude, long-range performance. Despite these strengths, the YF-23 was ultimately not selected for production, as the Air Force opted for the YF-22 (which evolved into today’s F-22 Raptor) due to cost, maneuverability, and development considerations.
Though it never saw combat, the YF-23 represents a pivotal moment in aviation history. The “Gray Ghost” embodied cutting-edge stealth and performance concepts that heavily influenced later aircraft design, including aspects of the F-35 Lightning II and next-generation fighter programs. Today, PAV-2 remains preserved as a remarkable artifact of what could have been the Air Force’s frontline fighter, symbolizing both the ambition and competitiveness of Cold War-era aerospace development.
This 1:72 scale model complete with its internal weapons load of 3 AIM-120s and 2 AIM-9s, captures the futuristic lines and stealthy elegance of one of the most advanced prototypes ever built. With finely detailed paneling, accurate markings, and precision craftsmanship, this replica is a must-have centerpiece for collectors and aviation enthusiasts who appreciate rare aircraft and the “what if” stories of aviation history.
