HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Hungarian Air Force (Magyar Légierő) operates the JAS 39 Gripen as its primary multirole fighter, based at Kecskemét Air Base. This specific model (numbered 31) replicates a jet known for performing at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) at RAF Fairford in 2022. The actual Gripen replaced Hungary's aging MiG-29 fleet to provide NATO-compatible supersonic interception and air defense.
After joining NATO in 1999, Hungary sought to replace its aging MiG-29 fleet. In 2001, the Hungarian government chose a lease-purchase agreement with Sweden for 14 Gripen fighters (12 single-seat JAS 39C and 2 two-seat JAS 39D), favoring them over American F-16 offers due to better financial terms.
The first aircraft arrived at Kecskemét Air Base in March 2006. By the end of 2010, the Gripens became the sole guardians of Hungarian airspace as the MiG-29s were retired.
In February 2024, Hungary signed a contract for four additional Gripen C aircraft, bringing the total fleet to 18. Under the current agreement, Hungary will transition from leasing to full ownership of the original 14 jets in early 2026.
