The Sherman Firefly Mk.VC was a vital British adaptation of the American M4 Sherman, created to counter the growing threat posed by German heavy armor during the Second World War. By fitting the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun into the Sherman V (M4A4) hull, British engineers produced a tank capable of engaging Panthers and Tigers at combat-effective ranges. Although externally similar to standard Shermans, the Firefly’s longer gun barrel and revised internal layout marked it as one of the most formidable Allied tanks of the European campaign.
The Firefly Mk.VC known as “Velikye Luki” served with A Squadron, 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, part of the 33rd Armoured Brigade during the Normandy campaign of 1944.
