HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sherman Firefly Mk.VC was a vital British adaptation of the American M4 Sherman, created to counter the growing threat posed by German heavy armor during the Second World War. By fitting the powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun into the Sherman V (M4A4) hull, British engineers produced a tank capable of engaging Panthers and Tigers at combat-effective ranges. Although externally similar to standard Shermans, the Firefly’s longer gun barrel and revised internal layout marked it as one of the most formidable Allied tanks of the European campaign.
The Firefly Mk.VC known as “Velikye Luki” served with A Squadron, 1st Northamptonshire Yeomanry, part of the 33rd Armoured Brigade during the Normandy campaign of 1944. The regiment landed in France shortly after D-Day and was rapidly committed to intense fighting in the bocage country, where narrow lanes, hedgerows, and concealed German positions made armored warfare especially dangerous. Fireflys were carefully deployed within mixed troops to provide long-range anti-tank cover while standard Shermans supported infantry assaults.
During the Normandy battles, including operations such as Epsom, Goodwood, and the gradual breakout from the Caen sector, “Velikye Luki” and other Fireflys of the brigade faced frequent encounters with German Panzer divisions. The 17-pounder’s high-velocity rounds proved decisive in ambushes and defensive actions, allowing British crews to knock out enemy armor before it could close to lethal range. These engagements were part of the wider Second World War European Theater conflict, which saw Allied forces grind down German resistance and begin the liberation of Western Europe.
This 1:72 scale model offers collectors a detailed representation of a hard-fighting British tank from Normandy, combining historical accuracy with compact display appeal, and making it an excellent choice for enthusiasts of World War II armor and British armored units.
