HISTORY ASPECTS:
The M35 gun truck emerged out of necessity during the Vietnam War, where U.S. Army supply convoys faced constant ambushes along remote jungle routes. Originally designed as a 2½-ton cargo truck, the M35 was modified by crews in the field into heavily armed convoy escorts. Soldiers reinforced the cargo beds with sandbags, steel plating, or scrap armor and mounted a variety of weapons, ranging from M60 machine guns to .50 caliber Brownings and even miniguns. These improvised fighting vehicles became known as “gun trucks,” offering vital protection for vulnerable fuel and ammunition convoys operating in hostile territory.
In Vietnam, the M35 gun truck proved its worth in repelling enemy ambushes along notorious supply routes like “Ambush Alley” and “Thunder Road.” The firepower provided by the gun trucks often turned the tide of attacks, allowing convoys to push through engagements that would otherwise have been disastrous. While not officially part of U.S. Army doctrine at the time, the success of these makeshift armored trucks highlighted the ingenuity of soldiers adapting to the realities of guerrilla warfare. Many gun trucks were given colorful names and artwork, adding to their legend and morale-boosting presence within the convoys.
Though most famously associated with Vietnam, the concept of the M35 gun truck did not disappear after the conflict. Lessons learned from their use influenced later convoy protection strategies in Iraq and Afghanistan, where up-armored trucks and MRAPs (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles) carried on the same mission: to guard logistics lifelines against ambushes and improvised explosive devices. The M35 gun truck remains a symbol of adaptability and determination, representing how soldiers turned an ordinary cargo truck into a formidable weapon of war.
This 1:72 scale model of the M35 gun truck captures the rugged modifications and battlefield character of these legendary convoy defenders. With finely crafted details, it offers collectors and military history enthusiasts the chance to own a piece of Vietnam War heritage and honor the ingenuity of the soldiers who transformed the M35 into a battlefield icon.
