HISTORY ASPECTS:
USS Yorktown (CG-48) was a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser commissioned into the U.S. Navy on July 4, 1984. Named after the historic battles of Yorktown, the ship was the second Navy vessel to bear the name in honor of the American Revolution victory. Yorktown was one of the early Ticonderoga-class cruisers, built around the Aegis Combat System, which provided advanced radar and missile-tracking capabilities, making it one of the most sophisticated surface combatants of its time. Designed for multi-mission roles, Yorktown was capable of conducting air defense, anti-submarine warfare, surface warfare, and strike operations.
During its service life, USS Yorktown was deployed in several key operations, including missions in the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Gulf. One of its notable involvements was during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, where it provided critical air defense coverage for coalition naval forces and supported strike missions against Iraqi targets. The ship's advanced systems allowed it to track hundreds of aircraft and missiles simultaneously, demonstrating the power of the Aegis system in high-threat environments. Yorktown also participated in counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean and helped enforce sanctions against Iraq following the Gulf War.
Yorktown also became famous for its role in technological experimentation, including being one of the first vessels to test "smart ship" concepts intended to reduce crew size through automation. While the ship faced challenges during these early experiments, they paved the way for future innovations across the fleet. After two decades of service, Yorktown was decommissioned in 2004, but its legacy as an Aegis pioneer remains influential in naval warfare development.
Capture a piece of modern naval history with the 1:700 scale model of USS Yorktown (CG-48). With exceptional attention to detail, realistic weaponry, and accurate 1980s-90s era fittings, this replica makes an outstanding addition for collectors, naval enthusiasts, and anyone fascinated by the evolution of America's surface fleet!
