HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress was one of the principal heavy bombers of the United States Army Air Forces during the daylight strategic bombing campaign over Europe. Designed for long-range missions at high altitude, the B-17 combined heavy defensive armament with the ability to absorb significant battle damage and still return home. By the time the B-17F variant entered service, it had become a symbol of American air power, flying deep into occupied territory to strike industrial targets, airfields, rail networks, and submarine facilities critical to the German war effort.
B-17F serial number 42-6087, named “Royal Flush,” served with the 100th Bomb Group of the Eighth Air Force, a unit that earned the nickname “The Bloody Hundredth” for the heavy losses it suffered during some of the most dangerous missions of the war. Stationed in England, the 100th BG took part in high-risk daylight raids over Germany and occupied Europe, often encountering intense anti-aircraft fire and determined attacks from Luftwaffe fighters. Missions to heavily defended targets such as Bremen, Hamburg, and the Ruhr industrial region tested both aircraft and crews to their limits.
“Royal Flush” is closely associated with Lieutenant Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal, one of the most notable B-17 pilots of the war. Rosenthal flew numerous combat missions with the 100th Bomb Group, including the second Schweinfurt raid, one of the costliest bombing operations conducted by the Eighth Air Force. Aircraft like “Royal Flush” participated in these pivotal conflicts of the air war over Europe, striking ball-bearing factories, aircraft production plants, and other strategic targets that were vital to sustaining the German military. The courage and persistence of crews flying B-17s during these operations played a crucial role in weakening Germany’s industrial capacity ahead of the Allied invasion of Western Europe.
This 1:72 scale model is offering collectors a powerful representation of one of the most iconic bombers and the daring missions flown over occupied Europe.
