HISTORY ASPECTS:
The B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in 1930s by Boeing for the United States Army Air Corps. It was a high-flying long-range bomber, heavily used in World War II for daylight bombing of Nazi German strategic industrial and military targets. B-17 bombers also participated in the War in the Pacific, where they raided against Japanese shipping and airfields, early in the War. It was highly effective and reliable, and developed a reputation of being able to return to its home base despite extensive battle damage." B-17F "Memphis Belle" was named after pilot Robert K. Morgan's sweetheart, a resident of Memphis, TN. It was the first B-17 heavy bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe, after which both aircraft and crew were returned safely to the United States. It is currently on display at the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton, OH.
