HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Grumman TBM Avenger “Blopsy” was one of the many rugged and versatile torpedo bombers that served with the United States Navy during the final stages of World War II. Originally designed as the TBF Avenger by Grumman, production was later shared with General Motors’ Eastern Aircraft Division, whose aircraft carried the designation TBM. The Avenger was developed to replace the Douglas TBD Devastator and quickly became the U.S. Navy’s premier torpedo bomber. Equipped with a powerful Wright R-2600 engine, a large internal weapons bay, and a three-man crew, the aircraft was capable of carrying torpedoes, bombs, rockets, and depth charges, making it one of the most versatile naval aircraft of the war.
“Blopsy” served with Composite Squadron 76 (VC-76), operating from the escort carrier USS Petrof Bay (CVE-80) in 1945. Escort carriers such as Petrof Bay played a crucial role in supporting amphibious operations, convoy protection, anti-submarine patrols, and close air support missions throughout the Pacific Theater. During the final year of the war, VC-76 aircraft participated in operations supporting the liberation of the Philippines, strikes against Japanese positions, and preparations for the final campaigns against the Japanese home islands. The TBM Avenger's ability to conduct both attack and reconnaissance missions made it an essential asset aboard escort carriers.
The TBM Avenger was heavily involved in some of the most significant naval campaigns of World War II. Avengers participated in the Battles of Midway, the Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf, Okinawa, and numerous operations across the Central and Western Pacific. By 1945, the aircraft had evolved into a highly effective platform for anti-shipping attacks, close air support, anti-submarine warfare, and maritime patrol. Aircraft like “Blopsy” and their crews operated in demanding combat conditions, often flying long missions over open ocean while facing enemy fighters and anti-aircraft fire.
The Avenger earned a reputation for durability, reliability, and combat effectiveness, remaining in service after World War II with the U.S. military and several foreign operators. Its combination of range, payload, and rugged construction helped make it one of the most successful naval aircraft of the war. Today, the TBM Avenger remains an enduring symbol of American naval aviation and the carrier-based forces that helped secure victory in the Pacific.
This 1:72 scale model faithfully recreates the TBM Avenger “Blopsy” of VC-76 aboard USS Petrof Bay in 1945. Featuring authentic U.S. Navy markings, detailed panel lines, and the distinctive appearance of the legendary Avenger, this replica captures a remarkable aircraft from the final months of World War II. Perfect for collectors of naval aviation and Pacific Theater aircraft, it is an outstanding display piece honoring the aircrews and machines that contributed to Allied victory across the vast Pacific battlefield.
