Vehicle Make Diecast Models

The Make category at DiecastModelsWholesale.com is a convenient way to shop for diecast models by the vehicle make or manufacturer associated with the real-world vehicle. Instead of browsing only by vehicle type, scale, or subject, shoppers can use a vehicle make to find models connected with a particular automobile, truck, aircraft, motorcycle, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, or other vehicle manufacturer.

In automotive terminology, make generally identifies the name used by a vehicle manufacturer, while the model identifies a particular vehicle within that make. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, for example, describes Dodge, Ford, and Pontiac as vehicle makes and distinguishes them from individual vehicle lines and models.

For diecast collectors, however, a make-based catalog can extend well beyond passenger cars. DMW's current Vehicle Make pages include manufacturers and marques representing cars, trucks, buses, aircraft, military vehicles, agricultural machinery, construction equipment, and racing vehicles. Current examples include Mack, International, New Holland, Curtiss, Lockheed, Northrop, Dallara, ATR, and others.

What Is a Vehicle Make?

A vehicle's make is essentially its manufacturer or marque name, while its model identifies a particular vehicle produced under that make.

For example:

• Ford is the make; Mustang is the model.
• Chevrolet is the make; Corvette is the model.
• Volkswagen is the make; Beetle is the model.
• Mack is the make; Super-Liner is a truck model.
• Lockheed is the manufacturer/make associated with aircraft such as the F-16, F-22, and C-130 family.
• New Holland is the make associated with tractors and agricultural equipment.
• Dallara is associated with racing chassis represented in collectible IndyCar models.

The exact terminology can vary between vehicle industries, manufacturers, and collecting communities, but the basic idea is the same: make helps identify who produced or branded the real-world vehicle, while model identifies what the vehicle is.

This distinction is particularly useful on a diecast website because the same make can produce dozens or even hundreds of different models over its history.

Shop Diecast Models by Make

Shopping by make is useful when you already know the manufacturer you want to collect.

A collector might begin with Ford, for example, and then explore Mustangs, Broncos, pickups, police vehicles, racing cars, and other Ford subjects. Another collector may focus on Chevrolet and build a collection around Corvette, Camaro, Impala, Bel Air, trucks, and other Chevrolet vehicles.

The same approach works with commercial and specialty vehicles. A collector interested in Mack can find trucks in different configurations and scales, while an agricultural collector can browse New Holland tractors and equipment. DMW's current make pages demonstrate this cross-category approach.

Automobile Makes

Automotive makes represent one of the largest areas of diecast collecting.

Collectors can organize automotive models by manufacturer or marque and then narrow the collection further by model, generation, body style, year, scale, or theme.

Popular collecting subjects can include:

American Makes

American automobile makes offer an extensive range of classic cars, muscle cars, trucks, racing vehicles, police cars, and modern performance models.

Examples include Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, Pontiac, Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, Chrysler, Jeep, GMC, and Lincoln.

A make-based collection can cover decades of automotive history. A Ford collection, for example, might include a Model T, Mustang, pickup trucks, police vehicles, and racing cars rather than concentrating on only one type of automobile.

DMW also has dedicated vehicle categories for popular subjects such as Mustang, Corvette, Camaro, Charger, and Challenger.

European Makes

European automobile makes provide another major area of diecast collecting.

Depending on the make, collectors may find sports cars, luxury cars, classic automobiles, racing vehicles, compact cars, and commercial vehicles.

Examples include Volkswagen, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Volvo, and others.

A European-focused collection can be organized by country, marque, model, racing history, or era.

Japanese Makes

Japanese makes are particularly popular among collectors interested in performance cars, JDM vehicles, racing, and automotive history.

Examples include Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Suzuki, and Lexus.

Collectors can combine road cars with racing and modified vehicles to create a collection that represents different aspects of Japanese automotive culture.

Truck and Commercial Vehicle Makes

Make-based collecting is especially useful for trucks because many manufacturers have produced recognizable vehicles across multiple decades.

DMW's Vehicle Make category includes truck manufacturers such as Mack and International, with current products ranging from highway tractors and sleepers to vintage trucks and agricultural equipment.

Truck collectors can organize a collection around a manufacturer and then collect different:

• Cab configurations
• Tractor-trailers
• Sleeper trucks
• Day cabs
• Construction trucks
• Heavy-haul vehicles
• Delivery vehicles
• Utility trucks
• Vintage trucks
• Racing or promotional trucks

A make-based approach can therefore create a much broader collection than searching for "semi truck" alone.

Aircraft Makes and Manufacturers

The Vehicle Make category also applies to aircraft manufacturers.

For aircraft collectors, manufacturer identity can be just as important as it is for automobile collectors. DMW's current make pages include aircraft manufacturers such as Curtiss, Lockheed, Northrop, and ATR, with products ranging from historic military aircraft to modern fighters, transport aircraft, and regional airliners.

This makes the Make category useful for collectors who want to follow the history of a particular aircraft manufacturer.

For example, a Lockheed-focused collection can encompass very different aircraft, including the F-16, F-22, C-130, F-117, P-38, and other Lockheed aircraft represented in current diecast releases.

Collectors can then organize those models further by aircraft type, military branch, country, era, or scale.

Agricultural Equipment Makes

Vehicle makes are not limited to cars and trucks.

Agricultural machinery is another important diecast collecting area, with manufacturers such as New Holland, John Deere, Case IH, Massey Ferguson, Fendt, and others represented across the model hobby.

DMW's current New Holland make page, for example, includes tractors and agricultural equipment in 1/32, 1/64, and 1/16 scales.

For agricultural collectors, organizing by make can make it easier to build a collection around a favorite manufacturer while still covering different tractor series, implements, and generations.

Construction and Industrial Equipment Makes

Construction and industrial equipment also have strong manufacturer identities.

Collectors may look for makes associated with:

• Excavators
• Bulldozers
• Wheel loaders
• Motor graders
• Cranes
• Articulated dump trucks
• Mining equipment
• Road-building machinery
• Material-handling equipment

A manufacturer-focused collection can document how a particular company developed different types of equipment over time.

DMW's broader Construction and Caterpillar (CAT) categories provide additional ways to explore this type of collecting.

Racing Vehicle Makes

Make-based collecting also works well for motorsports.

Some racing subjects are identified primarily by the chassis manufacturer, while others are more closely associated with an automobile manufacturer, engine supplier, team, or racing series.

For example, DMW's current Vehicle Make pages include Dallara IndyCar models in 1/18 and 1/64 scales, representing cars from different IndyCar seasons and teams.

Racing collectors can therefore combine make with other identifying details such as:

• Racing series
• Driver
• Team
• Car number
• Season
• Circuit
• Livery
• Chassis
• Scale

This is particularly helpful when a collection includes many versions of similar competition vehicles.

Make vs. Model vs. Brand

Understanding the difference between make, model, and brand is important when shopping for diecast models.

Make

The make generally identifies the real-world vehicle manufacturer or marque.

Examples: Ford, Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Mack, Lockheed, New Holland.

Model

The model identifies the particular vehicle.

Examples: Mustang, Corvette, Beetle, Super-Liner, F-16, T5.120.

Diecast Brand or Manufacturer

The diecast brand identifies the company that produced the scale replica.

Examples can include Autoart, Greenlight, Jada, Maisto, Norev, Diecast Masters, GeminiJets, ERTL/TOMY, and others.

This means a collector can search for a Ford Mustang made by Greenlight, for example, where Ford is the vehicle make and Greenlight is the diecast manufacturer.

Keeping these concepts separate makes it much easier to find a specific product.

Collecting by Make and Scale

Once you select a vehicle make, scale becomes another useful way to organize a collection.

A collector might choose:

• 1/18 for larger, detailed automotive display models
• 1/24 for a balance of size and detail
• 1/43 for compact automotive collections
• 1/64 for larger collections with limited display space
• 1/87 for compact vehicles and dioramas
• 1/50 for many trucks and construction subjects
• 1/32 for selected cars, tractors, and other equipment
• 1/72 for many military aircraft
• 1/200 or 1/400 for many commercial aircraft

Scale availability varies by make and vehicle type, so collectors should always check the individual product specifications.

You can use DMW's Scale category to explore models by size after identifying the make you want.

Building a Collection Around a Vehicle Make

Collecting by make provides a simple way to create a coherent long-term collection without restricting yourself to one model.

For example, a Chevrolet collection could include classic Bel Airs, Corvettes, Camaros, Impalas, trucks, police vehicles, and racing cars. A Volkswagen collection could combine Beetles, buses, Golf models, and other Volkswagen vehicles.

The same strategy works for manufacturers of trucks, aircraft, agricultural equipment, construction machinery, and racing vehicles.

You can also combine make with historical periods. A collection might focus on one manufacturer's vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s, or document its development from classic models through modern vehicles.

Make-Based Collections Across Vehicle Types

One of the advantages of the Make category is that it recognizes that a manufacturer can produce very different types of vehicles.

A single collection might include:

• Passenger cars
• Pickup trucks
• Commercial trucks
• Racing vehicles
• Police vehicles
• Military vehicles
• Aircraft
• Agricultural equipment
• Construction machinery

This is especially useful for collectors interested in the history of a manufacturer, rather than only a specific vehicle.

The current DMW Vehicle Make catalog illustrates this breadth: Mack is represented by trucks, New Holland by agricultural equipment, Lockheed and Northrop by aircraft, Curtiss by historic aircraft, and Dallara by racing vehicles.

Finding Your Vehicle Make

When shopping for a diecast model, start with the real-world vehicle make if you already know what manufacturer or marque you want. From there, you can narrow the selection by model, year, vehicle type, scale, diecast manufacturer, racing series, or theme.

This approach is particularly useful when you want to build a manufacturer-focused collection or find multiple versions of a favorite vehicle.
