It almost didn’t work out at all: originally a production version of the 300 SL was not planned at Daimler-Benz, but the re-entry into racing with the predecessor vehicle was unexpectedly successful.
The rest was contributed by the then importer for the USA, Max Hoffman. He had been calling for a small and a larger, two-seater sports car from Mercedes for some time. As successful as the 300 SL in particular was, Hoffman was dissatisfied. He was the driving force behind providing the gullwing with a more comfortable successor, from 1957 production was switched to the W 198 II roadster, the sales designation 300 SL was retained; so the car was built a total of 1858 times until 1963.
Not only was the 300 SL considered the fastest production sports car in its time, it also boasted numerous automotive innovations. For the first time, brake power support was offered for the drum brakes, later the switch was made to standard disc brakes on all four wheels. Gasoline direct injection was installed in a production vehicle for the first time and the dry sump lubrication also comes directly from racing. For the first time in a Mercedes passenger car, seat belts can be ordered as an optional extra.
