The Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, often known by its nickname “Warthog,” was developed specifically to provide close air support for ground forces and to destroy enemy armored formations. Entering U.S. Air Force service during the 1970s, the A-10 was designed around the powerful GAU-8/A Avenger 30mm cannon, one of the most formidable aircraft-mounted weapons ever produced. The 74th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS), assigned to the 23rd Tactical Fighter Wing (later 23rd Fighter Wing), operated A-10 Thunderbolt IIs from England Air Force Base, Louisiana.
