HISTORY ASPECTS:
The North American P-51D Mustang “Margaret IV,” flown by James Tapp of the 78th Fighter Squadron, 15th Fighter Group, served with the United States Army Air Forces during the final stages of the Pacific air war. Built by North American Aviation, the North American P-51 Mustang was one of the most capable piston-engine fighters ever produced, combining exceptional range, speed, and firepower. The P-51D variant, with its bubble canopy and six .50 caliber machine guns, was particularly well-suited for long-range escort and offensive fighter missions across vast oceanic distances.
By April 1945, James Tapp and his aircraft were operating from forward bases on Iwo Jima as part of the Twentieth Air Force’s strategic campaign against the Japanese home islands. The 15th Fighter Group was tasked with escorting Boeing B-29 Superfortress formations on high-risk bombing missions against industrial centers, airfields, and military infrastructure in Japan. From Iwo Jima, the Mustang’s extended range allowed it to accompany bombers deep into enemy airspace, providing vital protection against Japanese interceptors during these critical final raids.
The P-51 Mustang played an important role in World War II across multiple theaters, including the European and Pacific campaigns. In the Pacific, aircraft like “Margaret IV” helped reduce bomber losses during long-range operations and contributed to establishing air superiority over Japan’s home defenses. The combination of escort missions, strafing attacks, and airfield suppression helped accelerate the end of the war in the Pacific and demonstrated the Mustang’s unmatched versatility across global combat zones.
This 1:72 scale model is a highly detailed tribute to one of the most important late-war Pacific Theater fighters. Featuring authentic markings and the distinctive long-range configuration of the B-29 escort Mustangs, it captures the power and endurance of this legendary aircraft. Perfect for collectors of WWII aviation and Pacific air war history, this replica makes a striking display piece honoring the final push toward victory in the Second World War.
