Tuning & Custom Diecast Models

Tuning & Custom diecast models showcase vehicles that have been modified, restyled, or built around a distinctive aftermarket, racing, or custom-car identity. Instead of representing a vehicle strictly in factory form, these scale models capture the visual character of widebody builds, custom wheels, aggressive aero, lowered suspensions, racing graphics, performance themes, and recognizable tuning brands.

At DiecastModelsWholesale.com, the Tuning & Custom category brings together collectible model cars, trucks, and related figures featuring some of the most recognizable names and styles in modern automotive customization. Current listings include Liberty Walk LB WORKS, Pandem, HKS, Mooneyes, Mopar, Fram, and Turtle Wax, along with custom and event-themed releases from manufacturers such as Mini GT, Inno Models, Tarmac Works, Pop Race, Jada, Solido, GT Spirit, Otto Mobile, GCD, and others.

The result is a category that sits at the intersection of diecast collecting, Japanese car culture, motorsport, aftermarket styling, and automotive design.

What Makes a Tuning & Custom Model Different?

A conventional diecast model generally attempts to reproduce a production vehicle as it appeared from the factory. A tuning or custom diecast model takes that starting point and represents a modified interpretation.

Depending on the release, modifications may include:

• Widebody fenders and overfenders
• Custom bumpers, splitters, and side skirts
• Large rear wings and aerodynamic components
• Lowered ride height
• Custom wheels and tires
• Racing-inspired graphics and liveries
• Carbon-fiber-style components
• Engine or performance themes
• Aftermarket branding
• Special paint schemes
• Event-specific or promotional graphics
• Modified versions of classic and modern performance cars

Some models focus primarily on the body design, while others reproduce a complete real-world build associated with a tuning company, racing team, event, or automotive personality.

The Influence of Japanese Tuning Culture

Japanese automotive tuning has had a major influence on the appearance of modern custom-car models. The culture developed around modifying production cars for performance, competition, street use, and individual expression, eventually producing distinctive styles that became recognizable far beyond Japan.

One important example is HKS, which was established in 1973 and became known for performance-oriented products including turbocharger systems, exhausts, suspension components, engine parts, and electronic controls. HKS also developed competition vehicles and used motorsports as part of its engineering and product-development activities.

Another influential name represented in this category is Liberty Walk. The company's LB WORKS style draws from Japanese modification culture, including the visual influence of classic kaido-racer builds, with features such as riveted or bolt-on overfenders, dramatic bodywork, and heavily customized proportions. Liberty Walk's history traces the development of its LB Performance and LB WORKS projects into the international automotive scene, including appearances at SEMA and Tokyo Auto Salon.

These influences are important when collecting tuning models because the modifications are not simply decorative. They often represent recognizable automotive movements and design philosophies.

Liberty Walk and LB WORKS Models

Liberty Walk is one of the most recognizable names in contemporary Japanese custom-car culture, and its designs are particularly well represented in the DMW Tuning & Custom collection.

LB WORKS builds are known for dramatically altered bodywork, including wide fenders, aggressive aerodynamic components, and a deliberately customized appearance. Models based on Liberty Walk vehicles can therefore look substantially different from the original production cars on which they are based.

Current DMW listings include Liberty Walk versions of vehicles such as the Nissan GT-R, Nissan Skyline, Toyota GR86, Lamborghini Huracan, Porsche 911, Mazda AZ-1, Mini Cooper, and other performance-oriented models. Releases are available in multiple scales, with 1:64 particularly prominent alongside larger 1:18 and 1:43 models.

For collectors, Liberty Walk models can be collected by vehicle, scale, specific LB WORKS design, or manufacturer.

Pandem and Rocket Bunny

Pandem and Rocket Bunny represent another important branch of Japanese-inspired custom-car design. Their builds are associated with highly visible body modifications, widebody styling, aggressive aero, and motorsport-influenced aesthetics.

DMW's current Pandem listings include models based on vehicles such as the Toyota GR86, Mazda RX-7, Toyota AE86, BMW E30, Ford Mustang, Honda Civic, and Mercedes-Benz 190E, with releases from manufacturers including Pop Race, Inno Models, CM Model, Tarmac Works, Hot Wheels, and Model Model.

The wide range of vehicles is part of the appeal. A collector can find both familiar Japanese classics and newer performance cars represented with very different custom interpretations.

HKS and Performance-Oriented Models

Not every tuning model is primarily about exterior appearance. Some represent the performance side of vehicle modification, where engine upgrades, turbocharging, suspension, exhaust systems, electronics, and motorsport development are central to the vehicle's identity.

HKS provides a useful example of this approach. Founded in 1973, the company developed performance products and racing technology while helping establish a recognizable Japanese tuning culture. Its history includes early turbocharger development, engine technology, suspension products, electronic controls, and competition vehicles.

A diecast model associated with a performance brand can therefore appeal to collectors who are interested in the engineering and motorsport history behind the vehicle as well as its appearance.

Mooneyes, Mopar and Other Custom Themes

The Tuning & Custom category extends beyond Japanese widebody cars. Current DMW listings also include models associated with Mooneyes and Mopar, as well as branded and promotional vehicles connected to other automotive companies and aftermarket themes.

Mooneyes, for example, has deep roots in American hot-rodding and custom-car culture, while Mopar represents the performance and customization heritage surrounding Chrysler, Dodge, Plymouth, and related vehicles.

This makes the category useful for collectors with different interests. One collection might emphasize Japanese street style and JDM cars, while another may focus on American custom cars, hot rods, muscle cars, or branded automotive culture.

Popular Vehicle Types

Tuning and custom diecast models are available across a broad range of vehicle types, but performance-oriented automobiles are especially common.

JDM and Japanese Performance Cars

Japanese models are strongly represented, including vehicles such as the Nissan Skyline GT-R, Nissan Silvia, Mazda RX-7, Toyota GR86, Toyota AE86, Honda Civic, and other cars frequently associated with tuning and customization.

Explore JDM & Import Tuners for additional Japanese-market and import-focused models.

Sports and Supercars

Widebody and custom treatments are also applied to high-performance European and American vehicles. Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari, Ford, and other performance brands can appear in highly modified configurations.

These models can be particularly interesting when the custom version dramatically changes the proportions or visual identity of the original vehicle.

Trucks and Commercial Vehicles

Customization is not limited to passenger cars. Current DMW listings include LB-Trucks models such as customized Hino and Mitsubishi Fuso transporter trucks, demonstrating how tuning and branded customization can extend into commercial vehicles.

Custom Figures and Diorama Subjects

The category can also include figures designed to accompany custom vehicles and displays. Current listings include LB Nation figure sets in 1:18 and 1:24 scales, allowing collectors to create more complete automotive scenes around their models.

For additional options, see Figures & Figurine Sets and Displays & Accessories.

Scales for Tuning & Custom Diecast

Scale is especially important when collecting customized vehicles because body modifications are often a major part of the model's appeal.

1:64

1:64 is one of the strongest scales in this category. Its compact size makes it practical for collectors who want to build larger collections around specific tuning brands, vehicle models, or automotive themes.

DMW currently features numerous 1:64 tuning releases from Mini GT, Inno Models, Tarmac Works, Pop Race, Hot Wheels, CM Model, and other manufacturers.

1:43

1:43 offers a balance between compact display size and additional model detail. It can be useful for collectors who want a smaller display footprint without moving to the very compact 1:64 format.

1:18

1:18 models provide a much larger canvas for widebody details, wheels, graphics, bodywork, and other visual features. DMW's current Tuning & Custom listings include 1:18 releases from brands such as Top Speed, Jada, Otto Mobile, GT Spirit, and Solido.

When comparing models, always check the individual product specifications because the same custom vehicle can be released in several scales by different manufacturers.

Tuning Models, Liveries and Limited Editions

A customized vehicle often combines body modifications with a distinctive livery. Graphics, racing numbers, sponsor branding, special colors, and event-specific designs can become an important part of the model's identity.

The DMW Livery Models category is useful for collectors specifically interested in branded and graphic-heavy vehicle designs.

Tuning models may also be released as event editions, hobby exclusives, collaborations, or limited productions. Current DMW examples include models associated with events such as Tokyo Auto Salon, Thailand Diecast Expo, and other automotive events, as well as individually numbered or production-limited releases.

A limited-edition designation should always be checked on the individual product because production quantities and release terms vary by manufacturer.

For more specifically identified limited releases, visit Limited Edition.

What to Look for When Buying a Custom Diecast Model

Because modified vehicles can have several different versions, paying attention to the product details can help you choose the right release.

Consider:

• Exact vehicle — Check the generation, body style, and model year where provided.
• Custom brand — Look for the specific Liberty Walk, Pandem, HKS, Mooneyes, Mopar, or other branding you want.
• Body style — Widebody, silhouette, aero, race-inspired, or other modifications can distinguish similar releases.
• Livery and graphics — Sponsor and event graphics may identify a particular version.
• Scale — Confirm whether the model is 1:64, 1:43, 1:18, or another scale.
• Manufacturer — Different manufacturers may produce substantially different versions of the same custom subject.
• Edition information — Check for event editions, exclusives, or stated production quantities.
• Packaging and accessories — Some releases include special packaging, display cases, extra wheels, figures, or other accessories.

This is especially useful for collectors who want to build a coordinated display around one tuning brand or vehicle family.

Build a Custom-Car Collection

Tuning & Custom models offer a way to collect automotive design from a different perspective. Rather than limiting a collection to factory-production vehicles, collectors can explore the cars, trucks, brands, and styles that have been transformed through aftermarket design and performance culture.

Whether your interests are Liberty Walk, LB WORKS, Pandem, Rocket Bunny, HKS, Mooneyes, Mopar, JDM, widebody cars, custom trucks, racing-inspired builds, or modified supercars, this category provides a broad selection of subjects and scales to explore.
