The North American P-51D Mustang, serial number 44-15152 and marked QI-T Jersey Jerk, was flown by Major Donald J. Strait, the commanding officer of the 361st Fighter Squadron, 356th Fighter Group, United States Army Air Forces. Based at Martlesham Heath in Suffolk, England, in 1945, this aircraft and its pilot played a critical role during the final stages of the Allied air campaign over Europe. Major Strait, a native of New Jersey, named his aircraft with the affectionate moniker Jersey Jerk, combining humor and pride for his home state.
The P-51D Mustang was widely regarded as one of the finest fighter aircraft of World War II, with its combination of speed, range, and agility. Equipped with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the D variant also featured a bubble canopy for improved pilot visibility and six .50 caliber machine guns. Major Strait and Jersey Jerk flew escort missions for heavy bombers during the strategic bombing of Nazi Germany and also engaged in ground-attack roles as the Allies pushed into occupied Europe.
