The Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion family was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting troops, artillery, vehicles, ammunition, and other large loads in demanding expeditionary environments. The original CH-53A entered Marine Corps service during the Vietnam era, establishing the basic design that would evolve through the CH-53D and CH-53E variants. With its large cabin, powerful engines, and heavy-lift capability, the Sea Stallion became one of the most important transport helicopters in Marine Corps aviation.
Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) was established at Quantico, Virginia, in 1947 as an experimental unit responsible for testing and evaluating helicopters and developing new rotary-wing tactics. The squadron later became internationally recognized for providing helicopter transportation for the President, Vice President, senior officials, and foreign dignitaries.
