HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting troops, vehicles, ammunition, equipment, and other outsized loads. Entering service in the early 1980s, the CH-53E became the Marine Corps’ primary heavy-lift helicopter and was distinguished by its three-engine configuration, seven-bladed main rotor, and enormous lifting capability. Its ability to move heavy loads over long distances made it particularly valuable for expeditionary operations where conventional ground transportation was impractical.
CH-53E BuNo 161542, carrying the tactical code EN07, was operated by Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 (HMH-464) “Condors” from Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. HMH-464 was activated at New River in 1981 as the first Marine Corps squadron to stand up with the CH-53E, and the unit has remained closely associated with the Super Stallion throughout its history. By July 2008, the Condors had accumulated extensive experience supporting overseas deployments, humanitarian operations, and combat missions.
The squadron had an impressive combat record before and around the period in which BuNo 161542 was serving with the unit. HMH-464 deployed CH-53Es during Operation Desert Storm, flying hundreds of combat sorties in support of the liberation of Kuwait. The Condors subsequently participated in Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom, providing assault support, heavy transportation, and logistical mobility for Marine and coalition forces. In 2008, HMH-464 also supported Operation Continuing Promise, deploying CH-53Es aboard USS Kearsarge for humanitarian missions throughout the Caribbean and Central America, including relief operations in Haiti and other nations.
This 1:72 scale model captures the imposing proportions and distinctive appearance of the Marine Corps’ legendary heavy-lift helicopter, making it an excellent addition for collectors interested in U.S. Marine Corps aviation, combat support operations, and the remarkable history of the CH-53E.
