HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of transporting troops, vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and other oversized loads. Entering service in 1981, the three-engine Super Stallion represented a major advance over the earlier CH-53D, with a larger airframe, more powerful engines, a seven-bladed main rotor, and substantially greater lifting capacity. Its ability to move heavy equipment directly between ships, forward bases, and austere landing zones made it an essential component of Marine Corps expeditionary warfare.
Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) has operated specialized CH-53 aircraft as part of its “Green Side” support mission. Established at Marine Corps Base Quantico in 1947, HMX-1 initially focused on helicopter testing and evaluation before becoming closely associated with presidential transportation. The squadron's CH-53 fleet supported the Executive Flight Detachment by transporting White House staff, Secret Service personnel, press, equipment, and other passengers, while also performing heavy-lift and training missions. CH-53s were an integral part of HMX-1's presidential-support operation from 1967 until the final HMX-1 CH-53s were reassigned to the operating forces in 2011.
CH-53E Super Stallions also have an extensive combat record outside HMX-1. The type served in major U.S. military operations including the Gulf War, Somalia, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, performing troop transport, heavy-lift, resupply, casualty evacuation support, and recovery missions. HMX-1's aircraft were primarily dedicated to presidential and specialized support rather than frontline combat, so the significance of an HMX-1 Super Stallion such as Number 32 lies in its unique role supporting senior government officials and the Marine Corps' specialized aviation requirements rather than in a documented combat deployment.
This 1:72 scale model captures the imposing proportions and distinctive appearance of one of the Marine Corps' legendary heavy-lift helicopters, making it an impressive addition for collectors interested in HMX-1, presidential support aviation, U.S. Marine Corps history, and the remarkable operational legacy of the Super Stallion.
