HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Sikorsky CH-53E Super Stallion was developed for the U.S. Marine Corps as a heavy-lift helicopter capable of moving troops, vehicles, artillery, ammunition, and other large loads over considerable distances. Introduced into service in the early 1980s, the CH-53E became the Marine Corps’ primary heavy-lift helicopter and was distinguished by its enormous size, three-engine configuration, seven-bladed main rotor, and distinctive folding tail rotor. Its heavy-lift capability made it particularly valuable for expeditionary operations where ground transportation was limited or unavailable.
CH-53E BuNo 163075 served with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 (HMH-366) “Hammerheads,” a unit of Marine Aircraft Group 29 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. In November 2018, the squadron deployed CH-53Es to Norway for Exercise Trident Juncture 18, one of NATO’s largest military exercises since the end of the Cold War. The exercise ran across Norway and surrounding areas from October 25 through November 7 and involved approximately 50,000 personnel, 250 aircraft, and 65 ships in a collective-defense scenario.
During Trident Juncture, HMH-366 demonstrated the CH-53E’s ability to conduct heavy-lift and troop-transport missions in demanding Nordic conditions. The squadron operated from locations including Oppdal Air Base and Værnes Air Base and transported and inserted Norwegian troops during the exercise. These missions demonstrated NATO interoperability while emphasizing the ability to rapidly move forces through challenging terrain and weather. Although Trident Juncture was an exercise rather than a combat operation, the CH-53E had already established an extensive combat record, having been employed by the Marine Corps during conflicts including the Gulf War, Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq.
This 1:72 scale model captures the imposing proportions and distinctive appearance of the Marine Corps’ legendary heavy-lift helicopter, making it an excellent addition for collectors interested in U.S. Marine Corps aviation, NATO operations, and modern military history.
